Our client is a developing leader in the automotive safety and electronics industry who is looking to add an experienced and independent Product Development Manager. The Product Development Manager will direct the development of product design, specifications, testing, and supplier engagement around new products.

The Product Development Manager must have at least 5 years of experience working with automotive electronics.

Product Development Manager Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field of study (required)
  • Automotive systems engineering experience required with broad automotive mechanical, 12 volt electrical systems and software experience preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with electronics in the auto industry required; experience in vehicle wiring and fabrication preferred
  • Experience with electrical or mechanical design software (preferred)
  • User interface design and vehicle display experience (preferred)
  • Experience working with sensors, including cameras (preferred)
  • Project management experience (preferred)
  • Knowledge of embedded controllers, application software, and automotive electrical systems, including vehicle networks (CAN) and diagnostics (e.g. OBD port) (preferred)
  • Ability to coordinate mechanical CAD designs and circuit board housings (preferred)
  • Strong computer skills with knowledge of word processing and spreadsheets required; experience with Google Drive preferred
  • Highly resourceful with skills in problem-solving and critical thinking
  • Strong self-starter with leadership and decision-making skills
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments and meet deadlines
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Product Development Manager Description:

  • Product Development
    • Oversees and hands on development of new products on time and on budget
    • Determine the features and market needs for each product designed, through the checklist processes in Phase 1 and 2
    • Oversee and hands on development concept selection and key “reasons for being” for each new product idea and fits company’s product hallmarks of innovation, OEM quality performance and seamless fit to the vehicle
    • Engage in research and data analysis to identify potential product market opportunities and gaps
    • Lead contract engineers and outside consultants and vendors in successful product development support
    • Create and submit key product specifications and design plans to partners and outside design houses and manufacturing partners
    • Manage the validation and testing of new products, with support from the product development assistant and vehicle installer
    • Ensures company product management system (Fishbowl) is accurate and up to date at all times
  • Manage Vehicle Installations
    • Oversee validation testing for all new products
    • Oversee product installation videos done by Vehicle Installer
    • Oversee installations for OEM services projects
    • Work with the Vehicle Installer to conduct installation demonstrations of company products in employee/test vehicles
  • Manage Vehicle Fitment Databases
    • Ensure company Google App Guide is always up to date
    • Ensure DCI Vehicle Configurator is up to date and DCI “Holes” reports are responded to swiftly
  • Provide New Product Training
    • Train company staff on product features, benefits and market positioning relative to competitive product offerings
    • As needed, travel to key accounts to provide new product training and support
  • Product Tech Support
    • Provide training and key product insights to the Tech Support department
    • Be available to Tech Support phone personnel who are dealing with “in the moment” customer issues
    • Add an outgoing message to cell phone stating availability
    • Ensure a 1-hour callback standard for customer tech support
    • Create tools for customers to gain easier access to tech support, to self-serve, such as Tech Briefs, FAQs on the website, Facebook Tech Support page
    • Write Tech Briefs as needed and have Sales and Marketing team send out
